How To Draw Manga Heads

Before I start this article about how to draw manga-style heads, let me give you some quick facts about manga, so that you will be familiar with the terms and its history. These are the things that you need to know before you start drawing manga characters.

What is manga?

Manga is a Japanese word that means comic books. Manga are usually printed in black and white. Many people especially in Japan are interested in Reading Manga because manga have these interesting story lines and catchy characters that will make you read more. Due to the popularity of manga, many artists makes manga based anime or cartoons in English language, which are colored and lively because the characters are moving and speaking.

Manga characters are really popular because of their distinct features which are different from the cartoons that we watch and comic books that we read. Many people now are interested to learn how to draw manga characters. Some of these people also want to be a manga-ka or manga artists.

Learning how to draw manga can be easy, but you will need lots of patience and practice if you want to improve and enhance your skills. Most of the popular manga artists that we know took numbers of years of drawing manga characters, some of them will just advice you to be patient and you should be willing to learn or absorb new skills and motivated.

Anyway, here’s your how to draw manga head guide. I chose manga-style heads because it is one of the easiest manga feature than you can draw.

  1. Create or draw the drawing pattern first. Drawing patterns will help you balance your drawing. Not only that, drawing pattern will guide you where to put the parts and other features like eyes, nose and lips.
  2. Draw a big circle, and this circle will be your guide for the character’s face outline and skull.
  3. After that draw a vertical line on the middle of the circle, this vertical line will be the center of the face and head.
  4. Proceed on adding two horizontal lines or parallel lines in the middle of the vertical line. These lines will be your guide for the character’s eyes and nose.
  5. The lower point of the vertical line will be your starting point or the character’s chin.
  6. Now that your face pattern is already complete, it is time to flesh out and outline your drawing. Don’t forget to use or follow the pattern, it will help you balance your drawing.

If this drawing pattern is hard for you, you can search for simpler drawing patterns online. Drawing manga characters can be complicated for beginners, but once you know the basics and the patterns, everything will be easier and faster for you, so don’t be afraid to try new things because it will help you enhance your skills and it will also help you grow as an artist.
