1998 Baja Hammer, 320 HP I/O mercruiser problems?
ok, so i figured out that my V8 engine is only running on 5 cylinders. 4 years ago, i had a similar problem and had my Exhaust Manifolds replaced. 2 years later, i had the same problem and had the manifolds replaced again. now, i need them done again. somethings not right here....i shouldn't have to replace these every 2 years. even when i got a higher-grade material, it still only lasted 2 years.
i'm winterizing it by the manual so i don't know what to do. any suggestions? i really don't want to pay 3 grand just to have them break in 2 years....
Are you in Salt Water? Do you spend lots of time at wide open throttle, too?
By this time if you've had water leaking or seeping into the cylinders as a result of the exhaust manifolds, you very likely have so chewed up rings and a bad cylinder wall surface finish. I know this engine well. We did/do the camshaft for the 454 Magnum which comes in that engine from the factory. We went 550 hrs wide open and full load at the Mercruiser plant with this engine before they stopped the test.
A little different than yours, but the same basic engine. And I build them daily. I see lots of problems which are a direct result of what you are talking about.
I would not do a compression test, I would do a 'Leak Down' test. This will test how tight the ring and valves seal. If you don't have a leak down tester, you can get them online all day long from a company that sales specialty engine tools called Power house Products. Then you'll need an air compressor and each cylinder during the test needs to be at top dead center with both intake and exhaust valves closed.
