How To Draw Manga Art Successfully

Originally from Japan, manga is now taking the world by storm.

What is Manga Exactly?

Manga is a type of Japanese art which is very similar to comic books produced in the United States. While American comic books are printed in color, manga is printed in black and white inks only. Other differences between the two types of forms include the plot lines and how the books are read.

For instance, each unique comic book in America is centered on a single plot. The next title does not have to relate to the previous one. In manga, all the stories in a collected volume focus on the same plot. A reader’s approach to manga is to begin reading at the rear of the book and from right to left. American comic books are read in the opposite manner, beginning in the front.

How to Draw Manga

If you can put your visions on paper, then you can draw manga. You will need a few generic supplies like work space, drawing paper, pencils, good erasers, and possibly a tiny doll or figure for design purposes, but your mind is really the most important tool.

Manga can be drawn for your own enjoyment or as a profitable enterprise.  When you have some idea of the story you want to create and share with your audience, then you need to think about your characters. Their physical appearances will be one of the most important aspects of the storyline.

The age range of your target market will heavily influence the unique qualities of your story participants.   For example, more mature female characters can be recognized by curvaceous body shapes;  younger females are less defined.  Typically though, most manga characters are identified by inflated physical features.  These include the eyes, the hair, the body and appendages, and the attire.  All of these elements work together to define a character’s role in the story.

For this reason, it is essential that a manga artist be willing to perfect his, or her art.  Ways to accomplish this are by reading and studying manga books, learning from published examples, and by drawing often.  With commitment, anyone who is able to captureall the elements of a character’s identity on paper can create manga.  So go and enjoy.
